The Vision
Loneliness isn't a lack of people; it's a lack of permission. The Third Chair is one chair per cafe, painted the cafe's accent color, whose meaning every participating city agrees on: whoever sits here is open to conversation. Sit anywhere else and nobody will bother you. A social protocol, one piece of furniture long.

The Long Story
Every intervention against loneliness fails the same way: it requires organizing. Clubs, apps, events - all demand the very social energy lonely people lack.
The Third Chair asks for nothing but sitting down. The signal is unambiguous because the city standardized it, like a crosswalk. The cafe pays nothing but a chair. And crucially, the protocol protects everyone else too: by marking where conversation is welcome, it marks everywhere else as peaceful by default.
Pilot cafes report the chair is occupied a third of the day, and that the people who use it most are not who anyone predicted: new arrivals, the recently retired, and teenagers doing homework who just want ambient company.
